Multiplex is a project by Beyond Expression, initiated by Arjen
Bangma and Hicham Khalidi (Tag, TodaysArt). Collaborating with
co-curators Klaas Kuitenbrouwer (Virtueel Platform, DOGTIME
Rietveld) and Maaike Gouwenberg (If I Can't Dance..., Club of
Curators) the project evolved into its current form, an exhibition
with a symposium. The advisory board consisting of Aldje van Meer,
Deanna Herst, Monique van Dusseldorp and Rob van Kranenburg has
gratefully supported us with all knowledge and advises.
Vision
Culturally, technology was the means by which humans protected themselves from nature, and with which they tried to control it. Technology served as a fortress and a weapon against nature.
Most technology is therefor designed for a world of users with walls around it. Next to the walls is a source of endless raw material and energy. And outside is a huge, hostile place, where used -up stuff and dangerous waste can disappear into.
This concept has brought us a lot of development, but from the second half of the twentieth century it has turned itself strongly against us, as is well known. Through mass media and later the world wide web, one could see and experience that the world of users, the source of raw material and energy and the outside world were actually one and the same place, that was far from endless, and that tasks that were more and more irreconcilable.
In the 21st century we have to look for another role for technology, another story about technology, and from there also for a technology that follows different design paradigms. In this context, the practices from the arts, design and technology, science, politics and nature are more and more connected, and meaningful to each other.
The future
The Multiplex -TransNatural exhibition and symposium is the first step towards a large-scale art, design, and music festival - the MULTIPLEX festival. This is a new internationally oriented festival for innovation, creativity, and experiment in media, technology and art, design and music. The latest creations are presented inside a program that's fille to the brim, spreading indoor and outdoor over a large area of the new creative axis of Amsterdam: the WIbautstraat.
Beyond Expression platform/lab
MULTIPLEX is a project produced by the Beyond Expression foundation. Beyond Expression is _Platform and _Lab for the new generation artists and designers. Beyond Expression initiates and produces projects in which innovative fresh approaches and forms are made by art, design, media, technology, science, fusion and reflection.
